Hellboy Creator Responds to Calls for Third Film From Guillermo del Toro & Ron Perlman

Latest Your Nerd Side with Fonseca:

For many years, there have been fan calls for a third Hellboy movie to be made with director Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman. The possibility has been addressed in a new interview with the character's creator, Mike Mignola, and it's not very promising for fans who've been waiting for Hellboy 3.

Per Screen Rant, Mignola spoke about the previous Hellboy adaptations to promote his upcoming documentary, Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters. He hinted that a third film is very unlikely to happen as he and del Toro have since continued on with taking their separate directions in life. While Mignola is happy for the experience of collaborating with the famed director, he feels like the ship has sailed for their working relationship to continue at this point.

"Being able to look back now, I'm very happy about the time I spent with him," he said. "We had some adventures, and I just think we've both moved on in different directions. When you work on movies, especially if you're on the movie set, there's so much intensity day in, day out with these people — with the actors, with the director — and then when it's over, it's just over. It's a very strange feeling [where] you just go, 'I thought we were friends for life, but I’ll never actually see you again,' and, unfortunately, I think that's kind of where del Toro and I are. He's just on another planet."

Mignola confirmed that his new documentary delves into his relationship with del Toro. While he shared that there was indeed a "clash" behind the scenes, he stresses that it also hints that the movie says, "Yeah, but they don't hate each other still." With that said, Mignola reiterated how the two are now very far apart in their journeys, and the comic book legend has realized how the film world isn't really for him anyway.

"I just think there was a period where we intersected, and then we both kept going in our own directions," he said. "I think we certainly appreciate what the other guy is doing. I do think [del Toro] appreciates that I didn't cling to his heels and try to make a career in film. So many people in comics so desperately want to be working in film, and so many people [are] doing their own comics [as] a pitch for a TV show or a movie. I just love drawing comics."

Mignola added, "I remember [del Toro] asking, 'What are you going to do now?' I went, 'I'm going to go back and draw comics,' and I think he was relieved [by that] as opposed to [me saying], 'I don't know, what are you going to do next? What are we going to do next together?' It was a great experience working with him, but at the end of the day, I know what I do, and I'm not a film guy."

Hellboy Gets Another Adaptation With More Direct Involvement From Mike Mignola

The next adaptation, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, was developed with the most involvement yet from Mignola on an adaptation of his work. Jack Kesy is playing the new Hellboy in the film, while Brian Taylor directed. Mignola co-wrote the script with Taylor and Christopher Golden.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man will be released this fall.
