Your Nerd Side Halloween Special Part 01:
A new report reveals the roles played by the lead stars of Hellboy helmer Guillermo del Toro's upcoming film based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.
Previously, it had been announced that the starring cast of the new Frankenstein film included Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man: No Way Home), Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight, Dune), and Mia Goth (Pearl, Infinity Pool). Their roles were not disclosed at the time, and it could only be speculated which characters they might be playing. Now, a new report from Now On Netflix claims that Garfield will be playing the titular mad scientist while Isaac will play his creation, aka the "Monster." The report also noted that Goth will be playing the Bride, the character popularized by the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein.
Recently, it had been reported that Christoph Waltz had also boarded the cast, but his role is not revealed in the new report. One of the producers, J. Miles Dale, has also teased how del Toro's take on Frankenstein will be presented as a "deeply emotional" story, putting it more in line with the original novel that was written by Mary Shelley. Dale also suggested that del Toro would focus on the "father-son relationship" between Dr. Frankenstein and his creation, a recurring theme in the Shape of Water director's more recent projects.
"In the last couple of films, certainly with Nightmare Alley and then with Pinocchio, we've dealt with the whole father-son relationship," Dale said, per A.frame. "Guillermo and I both lost our fathers in the last few years. When you have a strong father figure, it's a big part of our lives. This version of Frankenstein very much goes down that thematic road. So, I feel like this is the third film in Guillermo's father trilogy. That's exciting, and when you read the script, it's very emotional and, of course, very iconic."
Guillermo del Toro Takes a Crack at Frankenstein
Frankenstein is a story that has been reimagined countless times in various mediums, but there's a lot of faith with fans of del Toro that the Oscar-winning director will be able to pull off the next great adaptation. Winning an Academy Award for his acclaimed creature feature, The Shape of Water, along with having helmed other films with similar themes, would make del Toro an excellent choice by Netflix to take a stab at Frankenstein. With such a solid cast already in place, del Toro appears to be off to an incredible start.
Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein film doesn't yet have a release date set at Netflix.
