Guillermo del Toro Announces Exciting Update on His Frankenstein Movie

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro finally shared a major update about the current status of his upcoming Frankenstein movie. This marks Del Toro’s first directorial project in two years, after previously directing Netflix’s acclaimed stop-motion animated remake of Pinocchio.


Posted on X, Del Toro officially confirmed that production has wrapped on his star-studded Frankenstein movie, after several months since filming started in Toronto back in February. Following the critical success of Pinocchio, The Shape of Water filmmaker has once again partnered with Netflix for the distribution of his new movie, which currently has no official release date attached to it yet. The 2022 remake gave Del Toro his eighth Oscar Award after it won against Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Turning Red for Best Animated Feature.

In addition to directing the remake, Del Toro also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming Frankenstein movie, based on Mary Shelley’s iconic gothic novel of the same name. The ensemble cast will be led by Oscar Isaac (Dune), Jacob Elordi (Saltburn), Mia Goth (Pearl), Christoph Waltz (Inglourious Basterds), Felix Kammerer (All the Light We Cannot See), Lars Mikkelsen (Ahsoka), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Ralph Ineson (The Green Knight), David Bradley (Harry Potter), and Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth). Isaac and Waltz are set to play the respective roles of Victor Frankenstein and Dr. Pretorius, while Elordi is portraying Frankenstein’s monster. As for the rest of the cast, further details about their characters remained under wraps.


Mia Goth Praises Guillermo del Toro

In a previous interview, Goth had shared what it was like working with Del Toro on the production of Frankenstein movie. The rising scream queen expressed how much she loved collaborating with the acclaimed filmmaker, while also hyping up the upcoming sci-fi horror remake. "It's been amazing. It's everything I wanted it to be and more. I love Guillermo. I love working with him, he's an incredible director, everyone knows that, but he's also just like such a wonderful person and, yeah, I'm very excited," she said.


Apart from Del Toro’s Frankenstein movie, actor-director Maggie Gyllenhaal is also directing a new adaptation of Shelley’s 1818 novel, which is also expected to debut in 2025. Titled as The Bride!, Gyllenhaal's new monster movie will be led by Christian Bale as Frankenstein’s monster and Jessie Buckley as Frankenstein’s bride. They are joined by Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, John Magaro and more. The project was originally developed for Netflix, who reportedly exited the movie in order to shift its focus to Del Toro’s adaptation. The film will now be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on September 26, 2025.
