Ghostbusters Multiplayer Game Announcement Trailer Gives Winston, Ray New Roles

Predator: Hunting Grounds developer IllFonic dropped the announcement trailer for its upcoming Ghostbusters asymmetric multiplayer game.

Titled Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, the trailer, which you can see below opens with narration from classic team member Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson), who is recruiting and training the next generation of paranormal ghost catchers. Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) also makes an appearance as the owner of an occult bookstore. In addition to revealing gameplay for Spirits Unleashed, the trailer confirms the title as a four-versus-one multiplayer game in which the solo player takes on the role of a ghost.

In the game, which Hudson confirmed as in development in December, players will take over the Ghostbusters' original base and will be able to customize both that location and their characters with unlockables. While the Ghostbusters will operate from a first-person viewpoint, ghosts will be controllable in third-person. Ghosts will also be able to see through walls using an ability called Ghost Vision. Spirits Unleashed is also said to be part of Ghostbusters canon and take place following the events of 2021's Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

The original Ghostbusters film released in 1984 and saw the team investigating paranormal activity in New York. Soon, they find themselves in conflict with an ancient being called Zuul as well as the Environmental Protection Agency. Overall, Ghostbusters proved a huge success and has earned more than $296 million worldwide across its various re-releases against a budget of around $25 - 30 million. The movie was also well-reviewed and currently holds a 97 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

A sequel, Ghostbusters II, followed in 1989. However, Ghostbusters II under-performed both commercially and critically as compared to its predecessor. Still, the franchise lived on through other media, including video games and comic books. There was an attempted reboot of Ghostbusters in 2016, subtitled Answer the Call, though that movie also under-performed commercially.

Afterlife, the most recent installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, released in 2021 and took place decades after the events of Ghostbusters II. Commercially, Afterlife earned more than $197 million worldwide against a budget of $75 million. While that number might seem low compared to some films, Afterlife opened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which had many reticent to return to theaters. The movie received mixed reviews from critics and currently holds a 63 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed will release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
