Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and one of the couple's pet dogs were found deceased at their home in Santa Fe, Mexico. Shortly after the news broke, an update revealed that authorities currently believe the deaths to be "suspicious" in nature.

Per TMZ, a search warrant for the home reveals new details about the tragic situation. A Santa Fe detective is quoted as saying that he believes the deaths of "the two deceased individuals to be suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigationbecause the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dognear the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10-15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak."

It is further reported that the local fire department and New Mexico gas company both visited the residence and conducted testing on the gas lines in and around the home. This helped investigators rule out a gas leak as a possible cause of death for the couple and their dog. It was concluded, "As of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence."

Reportedly, the bodies were discovered by maintenance workers who claimed that they hadn't seen the couple in about two weeks. Upon their arrival at the residence, they noticed that the front door was ajar with no signs of forced entry. As of now, no other information has been divulged about other possible causes or theories.

Hackman was 95 years old, and Arakawa was 63; the couple had been married for 34 years. When the news first broke about what happened, it was reported that foul play was not suspected, though a cause of death was not immediately clear. Given that there were multiple deaths, a gas leak emerged as a theory addressed by fans of the actor on social media looking for answers about the sad news.

Gene Hackman Previously Shared His Thoughts on Death

"I try to take care of myself," Hackman, who retired from acting in 2008, once shared of his thoughts on death in a 2004 interview with late TV personality Larry King. "I don't have a lot of fears. I have the normal fear of passing away... you know, I guess we all think about that, especially when you get to be a certain age."

He added, "I want to make sure that my wife and my family are taken care of. Other than that, I don't have a lot of fears."
