This weeks Your Nerd Side Show:
Per TVLine, Disney is set to raise the price of its Disney+ Premium and Hulu ad-free tiers. Effective Oct. 12, Disney+ Premium -- which is Disney+'s ad-free tier -- will see a 27 percent price increase, rising from $10.99/month to $13.99/month (or $139.99/year). As for Hulu's ad-free tier, it will cost $17.99/month (a 20 percent increase). It currently costs $14.99/month. For those who already subscribe to both Disney+ and Hulu's ad-free tiers, they will be able to sign up for the new Duo Premium bundle when it launches on Sept. 6. That bundle, while it costs $19.99/month, will end up saving the subscriber $11.99/month. The cost of Disney+ and Hulu with ads will remain at $7.99/month (or bundled for $9.99/month).
Disney+ launched in November 2019 with a price of $6.99/month, which remained untouched until March 2021 when it increased by $1. In December 2022, the $7.99/month price point was moved over to Disney+'s newly launched ad-supported tier, with the ad-free tier seeing a $3 increase to $10.99. At the time, Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted that another price hike was imminent, stating that the company would continue to "adjust accordingly" the cost of a Disney+ subscription. Come October, an ad-free subscription to Disney+ will cost a family $7 more than it did in November 2019.
What's Coming Soon to Disney+?
Luckily for consumers, Disney+ continues to add new content weekly, which should help a bit in justifying staying subscribed to the streaming platform. There are several hotly-anticipated series heading to the platform in the back half of 2023, including the Star Wars spinoff series Ahsoka and the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows Loki Season 2 and Echo. The fourth and final season of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, featuring several guest stars from the original film trilogy, also recently premiered on Disney+ while new episodes of Chip 'n' Dale: Park Life are coming on August 30.
Disney+ also has a stacked lineup of new series set to debut in 2024. Marvel fans will be treated to the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil and Dominique Thorne as Riri Williams/Ironheart in Daredevil: Born Again and Ironheart, respectively. The Star Warsgalaxy will keep expanding with The Acolyte, which is set 100 years before the prequel trilogy at the end of the High Republic era. New adaptations of Percy Jackson & the Olympians, The Spiderwick Chronicles and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea are also on the way.
The price hikes for Disney+ and Hulu's ad-free tiers will go into effect on Oct. 12.
