Deadpool & Wolverine Almost Had A Different Song In Its Opening Scene

Speaking to MovieWeb, the film's editors, Dean Zimmerman and Shane Reid said a song by the Backstreet Boys was one of the initial picks along with several other tunes. "It actually started with Kenny Rogers' song 'The Gambler,' which all of our pre-vis was cut to," Reid explained. However, Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, and director Shawn Levy didn't think it was the right fit. "At a certain point, the film took on a different language. The song didn't quite work with the same energy that we wanted that scene to have."

"Sharp Dressed Man" by ZZ Top was used as a temp track before Reid and the rest of the creative team decided on the final song. "We had like, seven or eight songs that we might have tried up against that," Reid continued. "Ultimately, it came down to the two different boy bands. I think we had a Backstreet Boys song in there," Zimmerman added. "In one hour, we did a mini test with a few trusted people in the production, and NSYNC was the hands-down favorite."

Deadpool & Wolverine Is Still Dominating Sales

Deadpool & Wolverine is currently the highest-grossing live-action film of 2024, earning over $1.33 billion at the global box office. The film is still breaking sales records on digital platforms, becoming the highest-selling R-rated movie in domestic markets. The previous digital sales record was held by the Keanu Reeves-led John Wick: Chapter 4, which became available for purchase in May 2023. This was followed by a Blu-ray, 4K UHD, and DVD release in June that same year.

A Deadpool & Wolverine gag reel was recently released online, featuring the kind of humor fans of the franchise have come to love. The outtakes feature Wolverine making an obscene gesture with his claws, and a crack about the eatery Shake Shack, causing digestive trouble. The clip ends with the group hanging out around a campfire, with Deadpool making a comment about Wesley Snipes' character. "Blade won't admit it, but he wants s'more," he says.

Deadpool & Wolverine is directed by Levy from a script he co-wrote with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wellsfinds. Per the official synopsis, "the story follows Wade Wilson who has put his past as the morally flexible Deadpool behind him, until he suddenly finds himself in a fight for the survival of his home-world and must suit-up again - and convince a reluctant Wolverine to help him."

Deadpool & Wolverine is available on digital platforms. The Blu-ray, DVD, and 4K UHD versions can be purchased on Oct. 22.
