This week's Your Nerd Side Podcast:
Another veteran of Fox's X-Men franchise may be donning his claws once again for Deadpool 3.
According to scooper and insider Daniel Richtman, actor Liev Schreiber will feature in Wade Wilson's upcoming threequel. Although details on his role in the narrative were not revealed, it's claimed that the character will be "bigger than a cameo" but won't have a massive role in the narrative. As is the case with all rumors, Marvel Studios and Disney have yet to verify the report so a pinch of salt is recommended.
If Schreiber does return, he won't be the only mutant with claws running around Deadpool 3. Hugh Jackman, the iconic face of Wolverine, is confirmed to once again play Logan despite claiming that he was done with the character after 2017's Logan. When asked why he ultimately decided to return, the actor admitted that he felt left out when he watched the first Deadpool in 2016. "I'm a terrible poker player," Jackman said. "All this time I was saying I was done, I really meant it. But anyway, somewhere deep down, this idea was obviously lurking and brewing. I was 20 minutes into watching Deadpool, and I had just announced, literally, a few weeks before that Logan was going to be my last [time playing Wolverine], which I fully intended. And then I was like, 'Uh-oh.'"
Could Sabretooth Return?
As for Schreiber, the actor has admitted that he would have loved to have played Sabretooth in Logan, the last movie to star Jackman's Wolverine, but his timing ultimately didn't work out. "It was very difficult given Ray Donovan's schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story," Schreiber said in 2017. "I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire."
In early 2023, Schreiber later noted that Marvel Studios never actually reached out to him about playing Sabretooth again. "They didn’t ask me. No, I mean, I don’t think he was part of that story, you know?" he explained. "I would have loved to bring Victor back, anytime anywhere, but he wasn’t part of that narrative. I wonder if I’m getting a little long in the tooth, so to speak, but probably not for Sabretooth."
Deadpool 3 is slated to hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
