DCU Fans React to Josh Brolin's Rumored Green Lantern Casting, Offer 'Better' Alternatives

The DC Universe may have found its Hal Jordan/Green Lantern. Josh Brolin has reportedly been offered the superhero role, although not every fan is happy with the potential casting decision.

Shortly after insider Jeff Sneider reported Brolin's possible Green Lantern casting, the DCU fandom exploded on X with their thoughts, with a majority being against the casting. Many claimed that Brolin is too old to play Hal, especially opposite a youthful Superman, while others thought he didn't "look" enough like the character in the comics. There were a few fans who threw their support behind Brolin, with some pointing out that James Gunn could be going the Parallax route with Hal, which would require an older actor in the role. Comic book writer/artist Rob Liefeld, who created the Marvel character Cable (who Brolin played in Deadpool 2), even chimed in on the discussion, writing that "Josh Brolin is a kick ass, highly regretted talent" who "elevates every project he touches. If he takes on Hal, it’ll be great."

Who Do DC Fans Want to See Play Hal Jordan?

During their criticism of the Brolin/Lantern casting, many fans offered alternative choices for the role, with James Marsden (Cyclops in X-Men), Tom Cruise (the Mission: Impossible franchise), and Jake Gyllenhaal (Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home) popping up multiple times. However, it is worth mentioning that, while DC fans don't want to see Brolin as Hal, they are open to seeing the actor play a different role in the forthcoming shared universe. One fan pitched Brolin as the DCU's Deathstroke, who could possibly appear in The Brave and the Bold. Multiple fans wrote that Brolin had the perfect voice for Kilowog, an alien member of the Green Lantern Corps. Michael Clarke Duncan previously voiced the character in the 2011 Green Lantern movie.

If Brolin is cast as Hal Jordan, he is expected to make his DCU debut as the Green Lantern in Lanterns, which was ordered to series at HBO in June 2024. The upcoming series, which has been compared to True Detective, series follows "new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland." The creative team for Lanterns consists of Chris Mundy (Ozark), Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and comic book writer Tom King. Mundy will also serve as showrunner on the eight-episode series.

A Green Lantern Will Appear in Superman

However, ahead of Lanterns, a different member of the Green Lantern Corps will debut in the upcoming Superman reboot that was written and directed by Gunn. Nathan Fillion, who has voiced Hal Jordan on multiple animated projects, was cast to portray Guy Gardner/Green Lantern in Superman, with set photos showing that he would be part of a Maxwell Lord-funded superhero team alongside Hawkgirl and Mister Terrific. Fillion is expected to reprise the role of Guy Gardner for Lanterns.

Lanterns does not yet have a release window on HBO.
