DC Universe Fan Art Imagines Jim Carrey in the Perfect Role

Latest episode of Your Nerd Side with Fonseca...

A piece of DC Universe fan art by Davi Alves imagines Jim Carrey as Mister Mxyzptlk. Prior to this, Superman writer-director and DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealed what he'd title a Batman and Superman crossover movie.

Shared onto Instagram, the artwork in question sees Mister Mxyzptlk with text at the bottom that reads, "Played by Jim Carrey." Next to him is more text that affirms, "Back again to plague Superman! The Imp of Imps... Mr. Mxyzptlk!" Putting the spotlight on Superman itself, Gunn touched upon how Christopher Reeve's Metropolis Marvel influenced his own in 2023, asking how does one take "this outrageous concept of a guy who flies around" and turn him into something real.

"I think that, you know, what we're doing is different," he added. "It's its own thing. But I'm definitely influenced by what [director Richard] Donner did with Superman, and what Christopher Reeve did with Superman, and Margot Kidder, who's fantastic in the movie. She's really the heart of it in a lot of ways."

"Back again to plague Superman! The Imp of Imps... Mr. Mxyzptlk!"

Additionally, Gunn promised that Superman won't feel like a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, avowing, "I learned so much from making [the Guardians of the Galaxy] movies. But it's not like Superman is going to have exactly the same vibe as a Guardians movie. It's actually quite different." Tying into this, Gunn also promised that the Man of Steel's newest cinematic outing won't be a silly one, as Gunn is dedicated to bringing a genuine superhero movie to the silver screen.

Besides these bits of news, Gunn delved into why other DC heroes are in the project, conveying, "They fit the story I'm telling. Story always comes first." Subsequently, Gunn professed that Superman isn't being used to set up future DC Universe films.

More recently, Gunn touched upon why Superman is the "true start" of the DC Universe after Creature Commandos, asserting that Superman is "a humongous epic." He went on to further note that Creature Commandos is "a way for people to just take a little nibble and see what it tastes like."

The DCU begins this December with Creature Commandos on Max, followed by Superman in theaters on July 11, 2025.
