Creature Commandos Showrunner Explains Why James Gunn Was Added to Intro's Animated Lineup

In a conversation with IGN, showrunner Dean Lorey talked about putting the DCU animated series' intro together and how Gunn winded up with a spot next to the Bride, Doctor Phosphorus, and the rest of Task Force M. As he recalled, "James had a credit and we were trying to figure out, 'Well, we gave all the characters sort of little moments,' animated moments in the credits. And we were like, 'James is kind of a character. We should give him something.'" This led to the shot of Gunn typing up a script before leaning back in his chair, with Gunn confessing he was caught off-guard by the cameo. "I was surprised and my ego was stroked and I was like, 'Oh, my God. Please don't let people think that I told him to animate…'" he added, with Lorey quickly confirming Gunn didn't request anything.

Additionally, Gunn confessed he doesn't quite remember how he settled on starting the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" arc off with an animated series, though being co-lead of the franchise, he jokingly credits himself with making it happen. "I think I just was like, I kind of wanted to do something animated and I wanted to do something with Creature Commandos for a while, and so I just started writing this thing," the writer-director explained. "We didn't have a deal, we didn't have anything. I just wrote seven episodes of this TV show and was into it. And so then I luckily had a really great CEO at DC Studios that was me, and I greenlit my own show." Early reviews for the show have been very positive, with Creature Commandoscurrently holding a 94% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The two-episode premiere of Creature Commandos saw Rick Flag Sr. and Task Force M assigned as guard detail to the princess of Pokolistan, whose rule is being challenged by the rogue sorceress Circe. These episodes also delved into the Bride's relationship with the country, her creator Victor Frankenstein, and Eric Frankenstein's (David Harbour) obsession with courting her love, as well as hinting at backstories for other members like G.I. Robot and Nina Mazursky. Despite serving as a reboot of the DCEU, Creature Commandos also incorporated some elements from the projects Gunn worked on before joining DC Studios, with Amanda Waller referencing Flag Sr.'s son's death in 2021's The Suicide Squad.

Will Creature Commandos Get a Second Season?

While Creature Commandos has yet to be renewed, both Lorey and Flag Sr. actor Frank Grilloare hopeful that the show will be picked up for more seasons. The latter has described his character as the DCU equivalent of Nick Fury and will make future appearances in Supermanand Peacemaker season 2 next year, both directed by Gunn.

New Creature Commandos episodes stream on Thursdays on Max.
