Netflix has released the first official teaser trailer for Cobra Kai Season 5, which confirms the earlier-than-expected premiere date of Friday, Sept. 9. "Our New Year's tradition just got bumped up a few months," the streaming giant wrote to accompany the Twitter version of the trailer.
Following the shocking results of the All Valley Tournament, Terry Silver is expanding the Cobra Kai empire and trying to make his "No Mercy" style of karate the only game in town. With Kreese behind bars and Johnny Lawrence setting karate aside to focus on repairing the damage he's caused, Daniel LaRusso must call on an old friend for help. Cobra Kai Season 5 premieres September 9 only on Netflix.
The trailer itself picks up after Cobra Kai's victory at the All Valley Tournament at the end of Season 4. With Miyagi-Do Karate and Eagle Fang Karate closing their doors, the Terry Silver-controlled Cobra Kai dojo is the undisputed king of karate in the Valley -- and is only expanding its influence. Seeing as how Johnny Lawrence is dealing with the repercussions of his own mistakes, Daniel LaRusso turns to another one of his former rivals, Chozen, for help.
Set 34 years after the events of the classic 1984 film The Karate Kid, Cobra Kai Season 1 premiered on YouTube Premium (then known as YouTube Red) in May 2018. The show returned for a second season on the platform in April 2019. YouTube Premium ordered a third season of the show, though had no plans to renew the show beyond that, prompting Cobra Kaito make the jump to Netflix.
Cobra Kai Season 3 premiered on Netflix on Jan. 1, 2021. A fourth season followed suit almost exactly one year later on Dec. 31, 2021. (Hence, Netflix's comment about the Karate Kid sequel series being a "New Year's tradition.") In August 2021 -- a few months before Season 4's premiere -- Netflix officially renewed Cobra Kai for Season 5. Additionally, co-creator Josh Heald has assured that there is still more story to be told.
"We have more beyond Season 5," Heald said in December 2021. "We are not writing to the end of the series in Season 5 right now... Season 5 is another enormous season with a lot of new flavors and a lot of things that you haven't seen before yet on the show. And it's not the end." The following month, co-creator Hayden Schlossberg revealed that Cobra Kai Season 5 would offer a look at what things would have been like had Daniel not been victorious at the end of 1989's The Karate Kid Part III.
Cobra Kai Season 5 premieres Sept. 9 on Netflix.
