Actors Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. had a mini Avengers reunion at the 96th Academy Awards.
On Wednesday, Chris Hemsworth posted a series of pictures from Sunday night at the Oscars on Instagram. Captioned "Fun night out at the Oscars!," the actor posed with his wife, actress Elsa Pataky, at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party. However, one of the pictures included one of former Avengers co-stars, Robert Downey Jr., and his wife, Susan Downey. Other photos from the red carpet showed them exchanging an embrace.
Hemsworth and Downey Jr. worked together in several superhero movies, starting with 2012's The Avengers, playing Thor and Iron Man, respectively. Their last collaboration was for 2019's Avengers: Endgame, which coincided with Downey's last film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Although Robert Downey Jr. didn't return after Avengers: Endgame, Hemsworth reprised his role again in 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder. So far, Hemsworth and Marvel are in discussions about a possible Thor 5. The upcoming Avengers will feature a different team, and it was originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, and was planned for release in 2026. Given the legal issues Jonathan Majors is facing after his guilty verdict, Disney fired him and reports claimed they are considering replacing the title. The film is also expected to be delayed.
Robert Downey Jr.'s Post-Marvel Career Resulted In His First Oscar
Robert Downey Jr. was quintessential to the success of the MCU. His 2008 Iron Man kickstarted the universe and set the path of a successful universe. However, despite Tony Stark's demise in Avengers: Endgame, the actor moved on to bigger things. In 2023, Robert Downey Jr. starred in the seven-time Academy Award-winning film Oppenheimer.
In Christopher Nolan's biopic about the "father of the atomic bomb," Downey Jr. played Lewis Strauss, the real-life former chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. For his portrayal, the actor received praise and took the award season by storm, culminating with his first Oscar, taking home the golden statuette for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Downey Jr. was previously nominated two more times, once for 2008's Tropic Thunder and once for 1992's Chaplin.
Although they have no plans to reunite on the big screen in a new Avengers film, both Chris Hemsworth and Robert Downey Jr. have big projects in the works. Hemsworth has joined the Mad Max universe and will play Dementus in the upcoming Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and will also voice Optimus Prime in the upcoming Transformers One. Meanwhile, Downey Jr. will star in HBO Max's The Sympathizer, a historical thriller based on the Pulitzer-winning novel of the same name.
