Actor Charlize Theron says she's unsure about the nature of her Doctor Strange character as she teases her Marvel Cinematic Universe return amid rumors of another sequel.
In a recent appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Theron spoke about her character, Clea, and what she knows about Marvel Studios' plans for her. The actor expressed uncertainty about what her character is supposed to be and hoped her role will be expanded upon. "Let’s just say I have some work to do…I don’t quite know who she is yet, but I will," she said. Kimmel spoke about the fact that Clea's character was unexpected and felt short for an actor of her stature to which Theron shrugged and subsequently replied, "I hope it’s not it. But, we’ll see, yes."
Theron also joked with Kimmel that she hoped Marvel wouldn't change their minds about her playing Clea for a potential Doctor Strange film down the line. The Academy Award-winning actor said, "I think I know. I mean, unless…I’m sure they can change their mind depending on what I say on this show."
Theron's cameo as Clea came in the May 2022 release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, appearing in the movie's first post-credit scene. Clea is a character that made its comic book debut in Strange Tales #126 for its Doctor Strange feature. She was a key part of Doctor Strange's story long before being replicated in the film, with Theron's character setting up a potential new adventure alongside the titular character for a future film.
The Future of Doctor Strange
The second installment in the Doctor Strange film saga also featured lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Rachel McAdams as Doctor Christine Palmer and Benedict Wong as Wong. The movie also saw the apparent end of Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, from the MCU, a conclusion screenwriter Michael Waldron evidently hopes will only be temporary.
There has been long-standing speculation about a third Doctor Strange movie coming to the big screen ever since the ending of the second film. Nothing has been officially confirmed by Marvel about a potential Doctor Strange 3, though there are spots open for movies in Phase 6that have yet to be announced.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is available for streaming on Disney+.
