Beetlejuice Resurrected at New Streaming Home Ahead of Upcoming Sequel

Tim Burton's Beetlejuice is finally getting a sequel with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice very soon hitting the big screen. Just ahead of the movie's release in September, the original film has landed on a new streaming home.

As of the start of the month, Beetlejuice has begun streaming on Max. The switch in streaming homes comes right before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice premieres in theaters on Sept. 6. The sequel is coming out 36 years past the release of the original film, coming to be after many years of a planned follow-up film stalling in development hell. Whether the new movie manages to recapture the magic of the original in the eyes of fans remains to be seen, but for now, streaming Beetlejuice on Max could serve as a way to prepare to catch up with the sequel's returning characters in September.

Directed by Burton, Beetlejuice introduced Michael Keaton as Betelgeuse, the role that would win the film the Academy Award for Best Makeup. The look of the titular character is one part of the movie's practical effects which have been praised, resulting in the decision to similarly rely on old-school filming techniques over relying on CGI like so many other Hollywood productions in recent years. The appearance is just one part of what brings Betelgeuse to life, as the unique performance by Keaton captures the spirit of the "ghost with the most" like nobody else could.

Michael Keaton Slipped Right Back Into Beetlejuice Role

"He just got back into it," Burton said of how Keaton was able to slip right back into the role for the sequel, per Entertainment Weekly. "It was kind of scary for somebody who was maybe not that overly interested in doing it. It was such a beautiful thing for me to see all the cast, but he, sort of like demon possession, just went right back into it."

Beetlejuice is widely considered to be among the very best films of its era, and a fan favorite Burton movie for many movie lovers. The film spawned a franchise that expanded into video games, an animated series, and even a stage musical. Burton had been open to making another movie ever since the first film was released, but it wasn't until recently that the long-planned follow-up finally made some traction.

The original Beetlejuice also starred Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Geena Davis, and Alec Baldwin. Ryder and O'Hara return from the original film for the sequel, joining Keaton. The new cast members also include Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Jenna Ortega. Burton returned to the director's chair with a screenplay penned by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who crafted the story with Seth Grahame-Smith.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will hit theaters on Sept. 6, while Beetlejuice is currently streaming on Max.
