Beetlejuice 2 Tracking for Monstrous Opening Weekend

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice looks set to put up some scary-good numbers at the box office during its first few days. New projections have the upcoming fantasy horror comedy sequel putting up one of the best opening weekends of 2024.

Per Variety, the highly anticipated Beetlejuice sequel is poised to earn between $100 million and $110 million at the domestic box office during its first three days in theaters. Should Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reach that range, the follow-up film will earn one of the biggest September returns of all time, nearing 2017's It, which made $123 million domestically during its opening weekend. Furthermore, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice would own the third-highest-grossing opening weekend by any film released this year, trailing Deadpool & Wolverine ($211.8 million) and Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million), both of which topped the billion-dollar mark worldwide.

The Beetlejuice sequel's latest projection significantly eclipses a more conservative one from Warner Bros., with the studio predicting it will make as much as $80 million across North American cinemas. Anticipation for the movie continues to grow, with its premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on Aug. 28 yielding positive reviews from critics. The original Beetlejuice became an Oscar-winning box-office success, making $74.7 million at the box office following its 1988 release.

Michael Keaton Returns as the "Ghost With the Most"

Starring Michael Keaton as the "Ghost With the Most,"Beetlejuice Beetlejuice sees the Deetz family return to their home in Winter Haven, Connecticut, following a family tragedy. However, when Lydia Deetz's (Winona Ryder) rebellious teenage daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega) discovers a mystery model of the town in the attic, she accidentally opens the portal to the Afterlife, releasing Betelgeuse, who's ready to haunt the Deetz clan yet again. Keaton returns from the original Beetlejuice alongside co-stars Ryder and Catherine O'Hara (Delia Deetz).

Directed by Tim Burton, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice came after several false starts to get a Beetlejuice sequel off the ground, with the initially intended sequel, Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian, going through various writers and ending up in development hell. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice got greenlit by Warner Bros. after fruitful talks involving Burton and some behind-the-scenes meetings between the filmmaker and Ryder. Keaton promises Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has a better story than the original movie. Meanwhile, Burton claims Keaton's performance is like "demon possession," and insists Betelgeuse is just as politically incorrect as the first installment.

Even if Beetlejuice Beetlejuice becomes a bigger critical and commercial success than Beetlejuice, Burton recently put the kibosh on a potential threequel. The director cited the time between the two films as one reason he wouldn't make a third movie.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now showing in theaters internationally and debuts in cinemas across North America on Sept. 6.
