This weeks Your Nerd Side Show:
Barbie has officially become the highest-grossing movie in Warner Bros. history, earning more than $1.34 billion at the global box office.
With its exact earnings at $1,340,301,000 per Comic Book, Barbie needs just under $20 million to surpass The Super Mario Bros.Movie to secure its position as 2023's highest-grossing film to date worldwide. Barring any unexpected over-performance from films like Aquaman or The Marvels, it's highly probable that Barbie will clinch the title of overall highest-grossing film of the year. Only Barbie and Super Mario Bros. have crossed the $1 billion threshold at the global box office so far.
Taking the third spot for 2023 is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, amassing slightly over $845 million. During its journey to claiming the studio's top record, Barbie overtook 2011's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II, which previously held the mantle for Warner Bros.' highest-grossing film with $1.34 billion. The second spot belonged to Aquaman, which secured $1,143,758,700 during its theatrical run in 2018.
Barbie's Cinematic Triumph is Unmatched
Barbie made its cinematic debut on July 21, quickly establishing itself as a box-office powerhouse. It held the top spot for four consecutive weeks and narrowly secured second place, trailing closely behind Blue Beetle in the fifth and sixth weeks. The film also came remarkably close to dethroning Gran Turismo from its leading position during its opening weekend.
Of its total earnings, $594,801,000 belongs to the domestic box office, accounting for roughly 46 percent of the Greta Gerwig-directed film's total gross. The remaining $745,500,000 has flowed in from international markets, mirroring the domestic-to-international ticket sales ratio that played a pivotal role in propelling The Super Mario Bros. Movie to its financial success.
Due to Barbie's box office success, Mattel is considering taking other popular toys to the big screen, despite other toy-based movies like Pokemon: Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie franchise failing to cross the $1 billion mark. The Hot Wheels car collection is one of the rumored candidates for 2025, with fans told to expect a grounded, gritty, and emotionally intense story from filmmaker J.J. Abrams. Other Mattel toy-based projects supposedly in the works include playthings such as the View-Master, Rock' Em Sock' Em Robots, Polly Pocket, and the Magic 8 Ball.
Barbie is expected to release digitally in the US on Sept. 5, 2023
