Smiling Friends and Birdgirl are both returning for second seasons on Adult Swim.
Birdgirl Season 2 is slated to premiere this summer. Meanwhile, Smiling Friends' Season 2 premiere window will be announced at a later date. News of these renewals comes as Smiling Friends joins Adult Swim's streaming lineup on HBO Max. (Birdgirl has already been available to stream on HBO Max for a number of months.)
According to Adult Swim, the upcoming second season of Birdgirl marks the return of the Birdteam, who are "still not learning from their mistakes. Judy Ken Sebben and the Birdteam attempt to navigate the troubles of modern corporations, tackling everything from ethics in new tech, to cancel culture and rejuvenating skin sack health fads. Will they fail? Spectacularly! But sometimes it's not about the solutions we come up with, it's about the new problems we make along the way."
Created by Michael Ouweleen and Erik Richter and developed by Richter alongside Christina Miller, Birdgirl stars the voices of Paget Brewster, Rob Delaney, Kether Donohue, John Doman, Negin Farsad, Tony Hale and River L. Ramirez. The series premiered on Adult Swim on April 15, 2021, with Season 1 running for a total of six episodes through May 10, 2021. The season was added to HBO Max on Oct. 9, 2021.
Birdgirl serves as a spinoff of Ouweleen and Richter's Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, which initially premiered on Cartoon Network in 2000 before running on Adult Swim from 2001 to 2007. The show later returned for a special, Harvey Birdman: Attorney General, in 2018. Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law was itself a parody of the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Birdman and the Galaxy Trio, which aired on NBC in the late 1960s.
Meanwhile, Smiling Friends was created by Zach Hadel and Michael Cusack. The show stars the voices of Cusack, Hadel and Marc M., with the recurring cast including the likes of David Dore, Mick Lauer, Erica Lindbeck, Chris O'Neill and Harry Patridge. Smiling Friends Season 1 also features a number of guest stars, including Mike Stoklasa, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Wolfhard, Perry Caravello, Jane Badler, David Firth and Gilbert Gottfried.
Focusing on the employees of a company dedicated to making its clients smile, Smiling Friends debuted its original pilot on April 1, 2020 as part of Adult Swim's annual April Fool's Day event. After being picked up in May 2021, the show finally premiered as a full series earlier this year, airing the entirety of its eight-episode first season on Adult Swim on Jan. 10. Smiling Friends Season 1 was added to HBO Max today, Feb. 9.
Birdgirl Season 1 and Smiling Friends Season 1 are streaming now on HBO Max. BirdgirlSeason 2 premieres this summer on Adult Swim.
