The highly anticipated horror sequel A Quiet Place Part II is officially Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.
As of this writing, A Quiet Place Part II has a Tomatometer rating of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 88 reviews. This is only slightly lower than the 96% Tomatometer score for the first A Quiet Place from 2018 based on 385 reviews. There's a somewhat greater difference between the average review scores, however: Part II currently has a 7.40/10 average score, whereas the original has a higher average score of 8.20/10. The original's audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes is 82%, while it remains to be seen how audience reception to the sequel compares.
Rotten Tomatoes' Critics' Consensus for A Quiet Place Part II reads, "A nerve-wracking continuation of its predecessor, A Quiet Place Part II expands the terrifying world of the franchise without losing track of its heart."
Some reviews say that the sequel improves upon the original -- for example, Kate Erbland's review for IndieWire declares that John Krasinski's "chops as an action and horror director have only increased," without losing sight of "the human drama that makes it all work." As the lower score average indicates, however, other reviews -- while positive overall -- consider Part II to be somewhat of a downgrade from the original sleeper hit. The A.V. Club's A.A. Dowd describes A Quiet Place Part II as "finely prepared leftovers, still tasty but with a faint staleness cutting into the flavor."
As one of the first major blockbusters of the summer movie season to premiere exclusively in theaters (it will be available to stream on Paramount+ after 45 days), many critics are finding A Quiet Place Part II extra enjoyable as a theatrical experience, with reviews calling attention to the bigger horror setpieces and the amazing sound design as particularly benefiting from the big screen. Lindsay Barr of the Associated Press writes, "It might sound cliché, but it's hard to imagine seeing it anywhere but on the big screen. It's the kind of movie that demands it." The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw notes, "What a pleasure to see a big, brash picture like this on the big screen."
Written and directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place: Part II stars Emily Blunt, Djimon Hounsou, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy. The film arrives in theaters May 28.
