We are here to engage and enrich your life with NERD LIFE! Big-screen setbacks. Small-screen momentum. Where does DC go from here? Join Fonseca on Your Nerd Side News as we explore DC’s future—from Supergirl’s disappointing box-office performance to the growing success of HBO’s Lanterns. These very different results raise a big question: what does DC need to get right next? Supergirl fell short of expectations, with PEOPLE reporting approximately $126 million worldwide against a reported $170 million production budget, before marketing costs. That makes its theatrical performance a significant setback, even as individual fans may feel differently about the movie itself. We also look back at earlier DC-branded disappointments, including The Flash, Green Lantern, and Joker: Folie à Deux. Across different eras and film continuities, those releases show that recognizable characters and big expectations do not guarantee box-office success. Is the problem superhero fatigue, the individual movies, or how those stories are being sold to audiences? Meanwhile, Lanterns offers a brighter story on television. GamesRadar+ reported that its third episode reached 10 million global viewers within three days, outperforming the premiere over the same initial viewing window. Could this approach to Green Lantern storytelling offer lessons for DC’s other projects? And the theatrical picture is not all negative: James Gunn’s Superman earned approximately $618 million worldwide. The challenge facing DC is turning individual successes into consistent momentum—not simply announcing another slate of superheroes. What should DC change—and what should it keep doing? Star Wars Books You NEED to Read — There’s More to the Galaxy Than Movies! You’ve watched the movies. You’ve streamed the series. You’ve played the games. But have you READ Star Wars? In this edition of Your Nerd Side News, Fonseca dives into the enormous world of Star Wars books and why some of the galaxy’s most interesting stories have never been told on a movie or television screen. Star Wars publishing has been expanding the galaxy since BEFORE the original movie even reached theaters. The first Star Wars novelization, Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker, arrived in bookstores in November 1976 — months before Star Wars opened in theaters in May 1977. Although George Lucas was credited as the author, the book was actually ghostwritten by science-fiction author Alan Dean Foster. And that was only the beginning. Over the decades, Star Wars publishing has grown to include: Adult novels Young adult stories Middle-grade adventures Children’s books Comics and graphic novels Movie novelizations Reference books Behind-the-scenes books Short-story collections Audio dramas and audio originals There are stories about Jedi and Sith, Rebels and Imperials, smugglers, bounty hunters, pilots, politicians, droids and characters who may never appear in a movie. WHY READ STAR WARS INSTEAD OF ONLY WATCHING IT? Books can do something even a great movie sometimes cannot — take you directly inside a character’s thoughts. A novel can show us what Darth Vader is thinking, what it feels like for a Jedi to experience the Force, why a character makes a terrible decision, or what happens during the years between the movies and television series. Books also let Star Wars explore eras and characters that would be difficult to fit into a two-hour movie. And sometimes the books actually influence what eventually appears on screen. One of the greatest examples is GRAND ADMIRAL THRAWN. Author Timothy Zahn introduced Thrawn in the 1991 novel Heir to the Empire. The book became a massive success and helped launch a new era of Star Wars publishing. Decades later, Thrawn crossed from the printed page into Star Wars Rebels and eventually live action. STAR WARS LEGENDS VS. CANON If you walk into a bookstore, you may notice some older Star Wars novels marked “LEGENDS.” In 2014, Lucasfilm created a new unified canon for future Star Wars storytelling. Many of the older Expanded Universe novels were rebranded as Star Wars Legends. That does NOT mean those older stories suddenly stopped being worth reading. Legends contains some of the most beloved characters, worlds and ideas ever created for Star Wars — including the original Thrawn Trilogy and Mara Jade. Meanwhile, modern canon novels are developed as part of Lucasfilm’s current connected storytelling universe alongside movies, television, animation, comics and games. THE HIGH REPUBLIC One of the best examples of what books can accomplish is Star Wars: The High Republic. Instead of starting as a movie or Disney+ series, The High Republic was created as a massive publishing initiative set centuries before The Phantom Menace. The project eventually grew across novels, young-adult books, middle-grade books, comics, manga, short stories and audio productions — allowing multiple authors to build one enormous era of Star Wars history together. AND THERE IS NO SINGLE “STAR WARS AUTHOR.” That may be one of the most exciting things about reading these books. Writers including Timothy Zahn, Claudia Gray, James Luceno, Charles Soule, John Jackson Miller, Christie Golden, Alexander Freed, Beth Revis and many others have each brought their own voice and perspective to the galaxy. Some books feel like war stories. Some are mysteries. Some explore politics. Others focus on Jedi philosophy, romance, horror, adventure or the darker side of the Force. FUN FACT: Star Wars publishing actually predates the Star Wars movie franchise itself — because that first novelization was sitting on bookstore shelves before audiences had ever seen Luke Skywalker look toward the twin suns of Tatooine on the big screen. WHAT IS GEORGE LUCAS’ FAVORITE STAR WARS BOOK? That question is harder than you might expect. There are plenty of claims online about Expanded Universe stories George Lucas supposedly liked, but there does not appear to be a reliable public statement from Lucas naming one specific Star Wars novel as his personal favorite. So rather than turn fan stories into fact, we’ll leave that question unanswered unless George himself gives us a definitive choice. Now we want to know YOUR choice. What is the greatest Star Wars book you have ever read? If someone has NEVER read a Star Wars novel before, which book should they start with? And are you CANON, LEGENDS — or BOTH? Who is really the greatest movie spy of all time? James Bond may be cinema’s most famous secret agent, but does 007 actually deserve the #1 spot? On Your Nerd Side News, Fonseca compares some of the greatest spies and secret agents ever put on the big screen, including James Bond, Ethan Hunt, Jason Bourne and other unforgettable intelligence operatives. We're looking beyond popularity and asking what actually makes someone a great spy: Who is the smartest? Who adapts best when the mission falls apart? Who has the best gadgets? Who is the toughest in a fight? Who works best undercover? And who would you trust if the entire world depended on one mission succeeding? James Bond helped define the movie-spy genre with exotic locations, incredible gadgets, unforgettable villains and more than six decades of adventures. But Ethan Hunt has repeatedly proven that he'll risk everything to complete an impossible mission, while Jason Bourne relies on intelligence, training and survival instincts rather than fancy technology. So does Bond remain the king—or has another movie spy surpassed 007? Tell us your ranking in the comments: Who is the greatest movie spy ever? Is Peacemaker Season 3 actually happening? After the wild ending of Season 2, fans are still waiting to find out what's next for John Cena's Christopher Smith — Peacemaker. James Gunn has previously said there are no immediate plans for a traditional third season, but that doesn't mean we've seen the last of Peacemaker or the 11th Street Kids. The events of Season 2 were designed to connect directly into the growing DC Universe, leaving plenty of unanswered questions about where Chris Smith shows up next. And the speculation isn't slowing down. When Gunn was recently asked when Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids would return, his response didn't provide a release date — but it certainly kept fans talking. So will DC eventually announce Peacemaker Season 3, or will John Cena's character continue his story through other DCU movies and shows? Fonseca breaks down what we know so far on Your Nerd Side News. Would you rather see Peacemaker Season 3, or have Peacemaker appear in another major DCU movie? Let us know in the comments! Before the new Masters of the Universe movie brought He-Man back to the big screen, there was the wild, weird and unforgettable 1987 live-action movie starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor. On Your Nerd Side News, Fonseca takes a look back at this cult favorite and asks a simple question: Is the original He-Man movie worth streaming today? We'll revisit what made the movie so different from the animated series, why fans still debate it decades later, and how its version of Eternia, Skeletor and He-Man compares with the franchise people know today. The timing is especially fun because Masters of the Universe is once again a major entertainment property, and the 1987 movie is currently available through multiple U.S. streaming services. Was the 1987 movie ahead of its time? Was it completely off the rails? Or has it actually become more fun with age?
